6th Hong Kong International Youth Music Festival
On the 9th April 2014, Sam Tet Voices along with Sam Tet Symphony Orchestra embarked on a musical journey to Hong Kong to participate in the 6th International Youth Music Festival. It was really an eye-opening experience for us all. This is the first time that Sam Tet Voices have travelled such a vast distance to compete in such a grand event. We were able to establish a good relationship with choirs from all around the world, especially The Hunter Singers from Newcastle, Australia. The competitors came from Australia, Hong Kong, Mainland China, Kazakhstan and Malaysia. The competition venue was at Good Hope School.
A workshop was held and led by Miss Susanna Saw. From there, we were able to learn a few techniques of choral singing and we had a very good exchange programme with The Hunter Singers. After the competition, a concert was held at the Diocesan Boy’s School. We performed in a grand concert hall and received a thunderous applause from the audience. We also combined with The Hunter Singers and sang the song “Take These Wings” and learnt the sign language of this particular song.
Our choir consists of 27 members including our beloved conductor, Lim Shao Shen, and pianist, Joshua Ng Jin Ho. We sang 7 songs which were “Con Que La Lavare”, “The Goslings”, “Jambatan Tamparuli”, “Bumi Malaysia”, “The Sea Gypsy”, “欢乐的那达慕” and finally “A Glimpse of Malaysia”. During the farewell dinner, we were very blessed to be awarded gold.
