Javascript is is one of several languages that provide
a means of adding dynamic elements to Web pages. It shares
some qualities in common with Java, and some with Perl (often
used for writing CGI scripts), but it is different from
both these languages in important ways.
As will also be the case with our discussion of CGI and
Java, we cannot teach you here how to program in Javascript.
Instead, our intention is to give you a feel for some of
the things the language can be used for, and at least a
general sense of how it works. Consequently, we will offer
some concrete examples; perhaps you will wish to add some
of them to your pages. Or they may entice you into searching
the web for other Javascript examples.
