The SMJK Education Portal ( henceforth the Ed Portal ) at www.smjk.edu.my is a custom - designed web site for the community of 78 SMJK schools in Malaysia, set up by the Council of SMJK Principals Malaysia . |

|
This is to enable the SMJK community to synergize and march hand in hand towards the goal of Smart Schools. |

What are the objectives of the SMJK Ed Portal |

Connect individual SMJK schools , teachers and students through its centralized web database and resources. |
| 2. |
Serve as Virtual Resource Centre for teaching and learning. |
| 3. |
Provide related services and training to SMJK citizens. |

| 5. |
How many people are we talking about here |
|
Basically that means more than 110 000 students and 7000 teachers in the 78 SMJK schools throughout the nation. |

Can you elaborate on the first objective |
|
The Ed Portal will provide various tools to create an online community for school directories and contacts. Among other things there will be;
| a. |
A SMJK Website to serve as the HQ as well as the nerve centre of the Council . |
| b. |
Each SMJK school will be provided with a school website for which a standard
template is available. HD space is 1000 MB per school. |
| c. |
Every staff member including non - teaching staff will be provided with an individual Email account of 15 MB |
| d. |
In addition to these, there will be Email storage available for sale to individual students and student bodies. |

What about the second objective |
|
The Ed Portal will comprise a ORC or Online Resource Centre which will be a free teaching content library accessible to registered users from the SMJK community over the Internet. Teachers and students are expected to contribute to the ORC which will consist of:

Test questions and answers |

Reports by discussion groups |

Research findings by teachers and students |

Hyperlinks to other ORC and education websites |

Sounds a little like a virtual tuition centre to me |
|
A little Yes and a big No. The idea is to encourage collaborative and interactive learning. Besides, we hope to widen the community's horizon, in particular the young citizens of SMJK's. It is intended to be a link to the fast changing world outside our community.
In fact, with the active participation of all concerned, we may and will widen the perspectives and change the world - view of the younger generations here. |

A comprehensive user guide called SMJK Education Portal School Admin Manual is available for download by all users. |

SMJK Ed Portal Administrator will email instructions and conversion bulletins to school Project Coordinator |

How much does the whole project cost |
|
Just the minimal capital outlay , maintenance and other incident costs alone will amount to more than RM 80 000 in the first year. This is after subtracting concession discount on cost of softwares given by Perridot Systems.
Thereafter, recurring maintenance cost is Rm 36 370 per year excluding cost of upgrading hardwares and labour cost of employing a full time Ed Portal Administrator.
The MoU between The Council of SMJK Principals Malaysia and Perridot Systems Sdn Bhd covers a period of three years. |

What does it cost the school |
|
RM 800/- per year for grade A school and RM 600/- for grade B school assuming at least 40 grade A and 20 grade B SMJK schools join the project .
Perridot Systems will bill the schools individually. We suggest that schools use LPBT or Wang SUWA to foot the bill. |

Can we opt not to join up |
|
Of course it is the school's prerogative to decide one way or the other. But please consider the following:

The SMJK Education Portal will provide an ideal avenue for the SMJK community to connect, interact ,exchange ideas and grow together. |
| b. |
It is the first stage in the march toward Smart School for SMJK schools. |
| c. |
The SMJK school principals in the Council AGM 2002 have voted in unison for the SMJK Education Portal project . They have also accorded the Ex'co the mandate to proceed with the project with Perridot Systems. |
