It is the first time that Malaysia has won the international competition sponsored by the UN Universal Postal Union (UPU) since it began in 1972.

A Malaysian student's letter on the plight of a tiger cub which lives in the rainforest of Malaysia won her the first prize in the 36th Universal Postal Union (UPU) International Letter-Writing Competition for Young People in Berne, Switzerland.

Lee Sze Ee, 15, a Form Three student of Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Sin Min in Sungai Petani, Kedah, is the first Malaysian to participate in the competition and the first to win the award, a Pos Malaysia spokeswoman said here today.

Lee was also the winner of a letter-writing competition held by Pos Malaysia in April which won her a laptop, a RM1,000 savings voucher and RM500 book voucher, while her prize at the international was a gold medal and a certificate, she said.

An elated Lee, in a phone interview with Bernama, said she was shocked to have won the first prize despite being new to the game.

The eldest of three siblings, she said she wrote the letter based on articles she had read in the newspapers on the Malaysian tiger's plight.

Her parents, both factory managers, and her teachers had given her the encouragement to write the letter which she took three days to complete.

Meanwhile, UPU in a statement, said Lee was among over three million youngsters from all parts of the world who joined the debate on climate change.

It said Lee's letter on a tiger's appeal to save the planet was "well-written and moving, and above all, positive and won unanimous praise from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) jury.

"With her sensitivity and imagination, the young Malaysian successfully conveyed the urgency of the situation and sent us a message: we must unite to save our planet," said the jury.
